A shovel is one of the simplest yet most useful tools every off-highway vehicle must have. Anybody who’s ever
been stuck in the snow, mud, or sand will tell you about the necessity of carrying a shovel. While there are as
many shovels to choose from as uses for it, one I find to be especially handy is the Gerber Folding Spade/
Shovel E-tool, short for Entrenching Tool.
If this sounds like something from the Army, you’d be correct. Originally designed to be carried by
soldiers and used to dig foxholes, E-tools have been embraced by Jeepers and outdoorsmen of every
ilk for years. What separates it from other similar tools is the small size, due to a folding handle, and
light weight, perfect for a SWB rig where space is at a premium. This is also its Achilles heel,
however; your back will get tired after a while, making you wish you had a full size shovel
to make things go quicker.
For a small shovel though, it works wonderfully and requires little space
inside your vehicle. I carry both a full size shovel and E-tool; do likewise if
you have the space.
