Detroit Auto Show
The 2008 Detroit Auto Show saw a number of innovative and exciting concept designs that stirred a ton of excitement and offered
enthusiasts a small glimpse into the future of the automotive world. Concept designs from most every major auto manufacturer,
including the Hummer and Jeep® brands, pushed the envelope with ideas that could someday become a reality.
Hummer’s release of the HX Concept drew considerable fanfare. Hummer’s design team proved to the off-highway community that
it’s capable in developing a vehicle that can compete with the new JK Wrangler. Features include “open-air” space with removable
hardtop, removable doors, removable fender flares, a powerful E85 FlexFuel 3.6L SIDI V6 and full-time 4WD system.
In comparison, Jeep threw out what many folks have seen as an eye-sore by releasing its Jeep Renegade concept. Some of the
exciting features include a hybrid engine platform featuring a BLUETEC diesel engine capable of running on bio-diesel and boasting
a fuel economy of 110 miles per gallon. In addition, the materials in crafting the vehicle are environmentally oriented with the focus of
the design being truly eco-friendly. The concept was very commendable and exciting despite what many of us see as a pretty radical
design with little chance for production.
With the off-highway market proving to trend upwards and fuel prices skyrocketing to new levels, it can be expected that we’ll see
more concept designs that may very well represent the future of off-highway adventure with companies like Hummer and Jeep
leading the way.
