Opens Doors
On February 16, 2008 a partnership between the National Geographic Society, The American Alpine Club, and the Colorado
Mountain Club came to fruition with the Grand Opening of the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum in Golden,
Colorado. Featuring historical artifacts, visual and tactile experiences, and multimedia exhibits, the BWAMM will serve to educate and
inspire its visitors about mountaineering and the mountains themselves. As Jim Whitaker, the first American to summit Mt. Everest,
said:
“The American Mountaineering Museum will be the first of its kind in North America and the
ultimate mountaineering experience available indoors! Visitors will be inspired to learn
more about mountaineering history world-wide, safety and mountain conservation through
the use of artifacts, exhibits, interactive learning situations and public programming.”
The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum is expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors annually to the
American Mountaineering Center, a historically preserved school building in downtown Golden, Colorado. The American Alpine Club
already possesses rare mountaineering artifacts, one of the world’s largest mountaineering research libraries and an extraordinary
135-square-foot scale model of Mt. Everest and the Khumbu region,
developed by world-renowned cartographer and mountaineer H.
Bradford Washburn—one of only two such models in the world. The
Museum will integrate these various components to create one of the
foremost facilities in the world dedicated to educating people of all
ages about mountains and mountaineering.
