By Frank Ledwell
For those who require a warm cup of Joe in the morning but haven’t found a compact, easy to use system for your
wilderness excursions, look no further: Jetboil’s Java Kit is the perfect answer to your backcountry caffeine craving.
What makes this system very cool is the all-in-one design that allows you to heat, eat, and drink from the included
1-liter insulated companion cup without the need for carrying matches. The included coffee press isn’t what you’ll
find at the local Starbucks™; however, it works nicely when you’re far from the conveniences of the local coffee shop.
Also included is a 1.75 oz. package of ground Organic House Blend from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Yum!
Plus, the lightweight and compact design packs
completely into the included companion cup and takes
up a mere 131 cubic inches inside your gear bag.
Starting the stove is a breeze with a push-button
piezo ignition that features an adjustable flame lever.
While the wind protection isn’t nearly as efficient as
MSR’s Reactor stove, the FluxRing™ burner design
does a nice job of concentrating the stove’s heat
output and blocking wind more than adequately.
The Jetboil Java Kit can boil a cup of water in a
scant 62 seconds; 22 seconds slower than the MSR
Reactor stove but still quicker than practically every
other stove on the market. With that said, the Jetboil
Java Kit doubles as a camp cooking stove with
accessories that include a pot support and stabilizer
kit for fitment of a 1.5 liter cooking pot, as well as
additional companion cups for group food preparation.
Pricing is more than reasonable at $109 for the
kit ($89 for the stove without coffee press), and
with its compact size and ease of use, the Jetboil
Java Kit is the perfect choice for the adventure chef
who requires a cup of Joe to start off the day.
