to fuel up in case the one in El Golfo had no gas as it had been
publicized as a possibility, we came down through the hills for a
beautiful view of the Sea of Cortez, the shoreline, and into El Golfo.
El Golfo was a simple town, one that has changed little probably in
the last 50 or more years. It was obvious that the towns’ folk were
poor but we found out that everyone was friendly, although only a
few spoke any English and fewer of us spoke anything more than a
few words in Spanish. The first thing that greeted us was the Pemex
station, and they had gasoline. They also had millions of these huge
flies that covered our Jeeps and buzzed around us. We found that in
Mexico, the gas was “full service” but the windshield washers
expected a tip. The gas was also about $2.80 per gallon or so.
Everyone filled up again, got ice, and went to the beer store next
door. Funny how in Mexico there are beer stores that only sell one
brand of beer.

1. There were several eagle’s nests in the utility
poles along the tracks. This guy was not happy
to see us.
2. On the move again.
3. We left the beach Saturday morning and went
Northeast past some dry salt lake beds to the
railroad tracks.
4. Saturday night Penasco Offroad club hosted a
barbeque on the beach for us.
